Adult Literacy

The Adult Literacy Program, in cooperation with the Literacy Council of St. Joseph County and the South Bend Community School Corporation, provides volunteer tutors for adults who want to improve reading skills or learn English if it is not their native language. Approximately 65% of students enrolled in the library Literacy Program are learning English as a Second Language. Students and tutors meet at least 1-2 hours each week.

The Library Discovery Class is a GED preparation class offered jointly by South Bend Community School Corp. and the Literacy & Outreach Services Dept. Meetings take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Textbook activities are combined with library discovery exercises, assignments and games. To register, please phone the Adult Education Dept. of the School Corp. at 283-7505. Below are some other aspects of the literacy program

  • The Literacy & Outreach Services Department has individual rooms for tutor and student use. Materials with reading levels below the 8th grade such as books, instructional software, CD-ROMS, educational games and toys, flash cards, audio cassettes and video tapes are available for use by students and tutors. GED and TOEFL test materials are available for more advanced students. Special equipment includes the latest Macintosh and IBM compatible computers, and Language Master with program cards, video players and audio cassette players.
  • Materials and equipment in the Literacy & Outreach Services Department may be used by the general public for educational purposes. Homeschoolers, teachers, parents of learning disabled students, local agencies and institutions serving developmentally disabled teens and adults, and those providing private tutoring are some examples of groups and individuals who have made use of literacy materials available in Literacy & Outreach Services.
  • Student and volunteer tutor applications are accepted in the Literacy & Outreach Services Department, Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • The Literacy & Outreach Services Department participates in the Martin's Receipt Programs. Credit or funds obtained through these programs are used to purchase software, equipment and print materials for adult new readers and persons learning English.
