“Come, Watson, come! The game is afoot.”
Welcome to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. We invite you to delve into mysteries both classic and cunning, as created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Depicting a dark and foggy London from the late nineteenth century, these stories take us back to a time when detectives developed well-honed skills of observation and deduction rather than relying on the modern sciences of fingerprints and DNA; none more so than Sherlock Holmes.
Meet moody and talented Holmes as described by his friend and “biographer” Dr. John H. Watson. Watson marvels, “How did you know that?” (or something like it) in each story, allowing us to learn the great master’s method of deduction. Of course, Holmes doesn’t work alone. Watson helps, as do the Baker Street Irregulars. Occasionally, even the men of Scotland Yard are cooperative. But ultimately it is Holmes, as modeled on Conan Doyle’s medical school professor Dr. Joseph Bell, who uses observation and deduction to save the downtrodden by exposing the murderer or thief and thus solve the mystery.
At SJCPL and other area libraries, we have many copies of our One Book selection, as well as companion novels, movies, events and opportunities planned for you throughout the month of April when we invite the entire community to read and discuss our selected title for 2012.
