More about Local & Family History Services
A detailed description of our collection (pdf)
The National Archives has released the United States 1940 Census images on their website for the first time on April 2, 2012.
Because most of the census has not yet been indexed, come visit us in Local & Family History Services for search tips and strategies for finding your family by location or address.
Keep track of 1940 census indexing progress at the FamilySearch website.
We are happy to help long-distance or homebound patrons with look-ups of St. Joseph County items, such as obituaries, marriage licenses, and newspaper articles.
For more information, please download the Obituary and Local History Search form or contact us at 574-282 - 4621 or local.history@sjcpl.org.
Thank you for your interest!
Interested in using the St. Joseph County Public Library’s genealogy databases? Now, even if you live outside of Indiana, you can obtain an SJCPL fee card that will give you access to many of our databases. Download the form to see details about databases and other resources you can use with your SJCPL card.
By paying an amount equal to what the average person pays in property taxes to SJCPL each year, you put yourself on the same footing as a St. Joseph County resident and receive a single non-resident fee card that may only be used by the cardholder. The fee for 2010 is $64.
In the past, SJCPL has only offered fee cards to people who came into one of our branches. For the first time, under the auspices of Local & Family History Services, anyone in the United States can obtain one by mail. Just fill out the attached form and follow the instructions on it, and you will receive your fee card in the mail.
