There’s nothing more exciting in life than bringing home a new family member. Especially when that family member is small, cute, and furry! This weekend I will be bringing home a brand new puppy, and I am really grateful that the SJCPL system has so many great books to offer about puppies. My favorite book that I have read (twice) is Before & After Getting Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar. Although I haven’t tried out his methods for chew toy and potty training yet, I really like his “positive reinforcement” approach to dog training.
Another book that I felt was very informative and easy to follow was The Puppy Owners Manual by Diana Delmar. This is a must read for any new puppy owner. Some of the information in this book was very useful in training our older “puppy,” too!
I’m currently reading Scared Poopless by Chiclet T. Dog (and co-authored by his owner, Jan Rasmusen), which is a book written by a dog/dog owner team who want you to know everything you can about the dangers that your puppy may face in the world. I’m pretty sure my vet, whom I have yet to meet until I take my new puppy in for his first vaccinations, is going to want to strangle me by the time I’m done asking him all the questions I have about the things I have read in this book. And I’m still only on the first chapter.

Hi Melissa. I’m so glad you’re enjoying my book, Scared Poopless. I have more info on my website http://www.dogs4dogs.com and a free e-mailed newsletter you might also enjoy. The newsletter is also written by Chiclet. As you have no doubt discovered, she pulls no punches!
I have two new-puppy tips: 1) learn all about vaccines before you let a needle near your pup. (See my Rethinking Vaccination.) More dogs have their health damaged in the first few months of their lives because they get all the wrong vaccines and get too many of them at once. 2) Teach your dog to “go potty” on command. The second you see circling or the beginnings of a squat, give a command like “pee time” or “go potty”–bearing in mind you’ll be saying this in public for the rest of the dog’s life. Reward the dog immediately with praise and with a healthy treat upon completion.
I hope this helps. Good luck with your puppy. –Jan Rasmusen

Hi, Melissa!
I’m so glad you blogged about your puppy! You guys are fabulous bloggers at the Francis Branch!
“The Fabulous Francis Branch Bloggers.” Okay, I’m being cheesy, but it’s true. Kudos!

Hey Melissa…
What a darling. I think I might have selected “Scared Poopless”. I’ve been off sick or I would have gotten back to you earlier. I’ll let Moses know he has some awfully cute competetion.
