Finding Lincoln in Downtown South Bend

Have I got a game for you.

No, really. I do.

On Friday, May 3rd, we’re going to have a scavenger hunt – only in this scavenger hunt you just have to find one thing: the 16th President of the United States.

That’s right, the Great Emancipator, The Rail-Splitter, Honest Abe, The Ancient One, Captain Chinstrap, The Liberator, the great Abraham Lincoln will be in South Bend for one night only and he will be participating in DTSB’s First Friday. Find him and you’ll get an oversized penny that may or may not be filled with chocolate. (Okay, it’s filled with chocolate.)

It will be like our own little Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego except that we’re looking for Abraham Lincoln and Rock-a-pella won’t be there to, well, rock it.

If you’ve never been to a First Friday event, it’s a wonderful evening where downtown South Bend businesses offer special promotions, activities, and performances that allow you to explore and celebrate the heart of our vibrant city. Each month has a theme. Previous themes have been love, discovery, dogs, art, music, movies, you name it! This month’s theme is Vintage Downtown and there will be numerous events for all ages looking at the history of South Bend.

The event runs from 5:00 – 9:00 but Mr. Lincoln and his tour guide (one of South Bend’s most prominent citizens, Susan Studebaker) will only be walking around downtown until 7:00. You can find out more information about the event at DTSB’s website.

Mr. Lincoln and Mrs. Studebaker will also be visiting the Friends of the Library book sale at 4:00 because they, like everyone else, love a good deal on a gently used book.

  1. Wow, Mr. Lincoln and Mrs. Studebaker!

  2. And chocolate pennies! I can’t wait!

  3. Sounds like a neat program. My genealogy efforts – along with the help of your Erv Morse – lists: Abraham (Abe) “Pres” LINCOLN is the 1st cousin 4x removed of husband of 2nd cousin of wife of John (Jack) William SWANTZ (Ancestry.com). There are several other distant relatives here in South Bend.
