Best albums of 2012… so far

We’re only halfway through 2012, but we’ve already heard tons of great new music. Here’s an unranked list of the year’s best albums so far from sources like Rolling Stone and Paste magazines.

What are some of your top albums of 2012?

  1. I liked:
    – Bloom by Beach House
    – David Byrne/St Vincent’s Love This Giant (Any David Byrne is good.)
    – Bob Mould’s Silver Age
    – OFF! by….Off! (Thanks to friend Wesley for this recommendation)
    – Swan’s The Seer
    – Though this was 2012 release of an old group, The English Beat box set is wonderful.
    – and my surprised choice is Van Halen’s A Different Kind of Truth though they used dynamic compression on the mix so it all sounds crunched a bit. I liked it better than some of Roth’s other VH albums which is blasphemy, I suppose.)

  2. Even if the only music released in 2012 was Fiona Apple’s new album, it would be a banner year. I want to marry every song on it.

But otherwise, I agree with most of the above, especially the Punch Brothers’ “Who’s Feeling Young Now” and Silversun Pickups’ “Neck of the Woods.” I’d also add Bloc Party’s “Four” and the Heartless Bastards’ “Arrow.”

  3. The William Parker Centering boxed set of unreleased recordings from the ’70s and ’80s is beautiful. Any and all Charles Gayle fans need to hear it as well.

Pharoah Sanders’ ESP-Disk boxed set is worth it for the stuff with Don Cherry alone.

  4. Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange
