Decorah Eagle Update

Introducing:

The 3 Ds

or as I prefer to call them; Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

We are encouraged not to name the wildlife so let me first explain the Number system. “D” stands for Decorah, Iowa where they are located, and 12, 13, and 14 are the number of eaglets that these parents have successfully hatched.

The camera was in the right  place at the right time to get a picture of the first “Pip”.  A pip is the eaglet hatching from his egg by means of a temporary sharp tooth on the top of his beak to help break thru the egg.

All three hatched successfully while over 400,000 people stopped by the UStream website to catch a glimpse of cuteness in the making. The stream went from 4.7 million total views to 9.7 million after it was seen nation wide on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.

At feeding time the gentle care of the parents amazes me as they make sure everyone is fed and then tucked in for a nap.  You can always tell the oldest as he maintains the “pecking order” over the other two.  He also stands the tallest.

Over the next few weeks the eaglets will be growing and starting to wander around the nest more.  They should fledge (fly) sometime in June.

Until then, please feel free to stop by the Main Library service desk to see the ever changing family of eagles.

If you are at home, check out the Ustream live feed. If you’d also like to read more about this, and other raptor nests being watched, click the link for the Raptor Resource Project.
